A Christmas holiday story about friendship and community. In the town of Pine River, every year around the holidays a Christmas tree appears in the middle of the town square, and every year the people of Pine River place their wishes on the tree and wait to see if their wish will be granted. This year, four kids decide to figure out the mystery behind the angel tree to try and discover how the tree always appears there every year and who is granting all the wishes. It's a little incredulous in these diverse times to imagine a town embracing Christmas so completely, and even when readers learn who the "GB" (Great Benefactor) is, there are still unanswered questions as to how GB pulled off such generosity anonymously for 25 years. But why be a Grinch about it. Earnest young readers will appreciate the Angel Tree's miracles (that seem to come fast and furious) and it's a wholesome family readaloud that unabashedly cherishes the spirit of the holiday. ( )

Valerie wants her seeing eye dog to have surgery, another boy wants a new house for his family.
