Hana Hashimoto, Sixth Violin is a sweet story that shows music is in the ear of the beholder. Hana admires her grandfather's musical talents and strives to be a talented musician just like him. She is dedicated to becoming a better violinist, despite the doubts of her brothers (and her dog), and works hard to achieve her goal, patiently practicing every day. Kids can learn several valuable lessons from Hana Hashimoto, from believing in themselves to sticking with a hobby. But most of all they'll enjoy the story and the beautiful illustrations.

In this moving story with Hana and her Ojiichan, we see the power of bravery, perseverance, and honor shone through a talent show performance. This is a story about culture, family, music, and being brave. This is a story that all ages can read, and should read, so this is definetly a book I reccommend having in the classroom. This story is applicable to all ages, and even has references to japanese culture and customs, which adds a personal flair to it for those accustomed to the culture. In my future classrooms, this is definetly a book I want to have on hand and in my student's library.

For beginning readers. Hana is a beginning violin player and she is learning from her grandpa as her inspiration. Her brothers make fun of her but she carries on and practices for the talent show. She plays sounds of nature for the show. Her family is very proud of her and she is inspired to keep practicing. This is a good story about never giving up, and determination. ( )

Hana was inspired by her grandfather who was a renowned violinist in Japan. She decides to sign up to play the violin at a talent show but only has had three lessons so far. She works hard for her performance and perseveres through it. This would be a great book for late kindergarteners to early elementary students who may be starting to learn an instrument or pick up a new skill. It also highlights the themes of hard work and a grandparent and grandchild relationship. ( )
