"The extraordinary new Lucas Davenport thriller from #1 New York Times-bestselling author and Pulitzer Prize-winner John Sandford. They call them Travelers. They move from city to city, panhandling, committing no crimes-they just like to stay on the move. And now somebody is killing them. Lucas Davenport's adopted daughter, Letty, is home from college when she gets a phone call from a woman Traveler she'd befriended in San Francisco. The woman thinks somebody's killing her friends, she's afraid she knows who it is, and now her male companion has gone missing. She's hiding out in North Dakota, and she doesn't know what to do. Letty tells Lucas she's going to get her, and, though he suspects Letty's getting played, he volunteers to go with her. When he hears the woman's story, though, he begins to think there's something in it. Little does he know. In the days to come, he will embark upon an odyssey through a subculture unlike any he has ever seen, a trip that will not only put the two of them in danger-but just may change the course of his life"--… (meer)

WOW. Once again John Sandford blows my mind. Gathering Prey was one wicked read. Can't wait to find out what he has in store for Lucas Davenport next. Keep 'em comin' John. ( )

Gathering Prey was a great book on its own. Each section was well developed, and I was involved in the story. I don't know where Lucas Davenport is going next, but I will be there for the ride. ( )

#25 in the Prey series. Davenport's adoptive daughter Letty befriends some drifters, who tell her about a vicious band of sadistic killers preying on the helpless. Lucas dismissed this as "legend," but then one of two disappears, and Letty helps the other get to Minneapolis. When the other goes off on her own, Letty follows, forcing Lucas to follow. With much of the book based in the UP (Upper Peninsula), author Sandford does a very good job of portraying the hearty locals, including the police deputies. Lucas is happy to be working an active case and not politicking, although he makes a few mistakes in this one. This book was very violant/graphic. ( )

I have always enjoyed John Sandford's books about Lucas Davenport but this time Lucas entered my home state of Upper Michigan. Because I have a sense of humor, I got a kick out of Mr Sandford's descriptions of our lovely countryside and local people. His descriptions were less than favorable towards the citizens other than the police force, but I will overlook that for the sake of fiction and fictional characters. And even the police force took many direct put downs. I was disappointed that Mr Sandford adopted an overly superior attitude towards the Upper Michigan and it's citizens. Most of us are nice people and don't look down our noses at the people from other states, even New Mexico.

I don't believe Mr Sandford has ever set foot on the Upper Peninsula or he would know that our highways are not lined with a green wall of oak trees. In fact the maples, birches, cherries, elms, and aspen highly out number the oaks in our lovely peninsula. And the pine trees are out numbered by other conifers like balsam and spruce. His descriptions of the towns and locations of hospitals were all wrong. Maybe the next time he decides to write about a new area, he should actually go there and explore the area rather than just look at a map and read wikipedia descriptions. ( )
