This is a weird story and I kept having to go back over parts to make sure I understood what was happening. I'm still not sure exactly what happened in the end I have to reread the last chapter to be sure. I finished it but I feel like somewhere I missed something. (

It's true that this was compulsively readable. Once I started I barely took a break till it was finished.

But did I enjoy it? Not really. It's not a happy story and contained some uncomfortable material.

But Ms Walters' talent continues and I await her next book with anticipation. (

The book was okay, it was easy to read and get through, maybe a little too easy. But, it didn't really captivate me or catch my imagination. I found it too predictable, and honestly, boring a lot of the time. The outline makes it sound like this will be a big thriller/horror, but I really didn't feel any of that in this book. I'm just glad it was so easy to read, finished it the same night I started it. Also, I do not get the ending, at all. Makes no sense to me, to be honest. And it was too abrupt, as if the writer had suddenly decided she was bored with the story, wrote a few more lines, and bam, that was it. Perhaps if the ending had been more sophisticated, I would have liked the book more in the end. Unfortunately, that was not the case. I wouldn't hurry to recommend this book to anyone. Though, out of idle curiosity, I may decide to read it again someday just to see if I can figure out the meaning of the ending by going over the book again. (

Minette Walters is one author I always read so I put this on hold. It was as eerie and disturbing as her other books and took me by surprise as I progressed through it. A modern-day slave, Muna, was adopted from Africa by the Songoli family and moved with them to the UK. She was hidden away, abused and mistreated, until one of the family's natural sons disappeared. As disappearances continued, her position in the family improved and it became obvious that she was much more clever than her parents had given her credit for. (
