Nurse Becky returns to Hope River after her employer, Dr. Blum, suffers a mental collapse. With no more money, she hopes to live in his old WV house, but turns out it was sold for back taxes. They move in with midwife Patience, who has a high risk pregnancy and her husband, vet Daniel. Daniel believes that something of Dr Blum is still in there, so he takes him out for chores and on the vet visits. Becky gets a job with the CCC - Civilian Conservation Corp, created to employ young single men and send money back to their families. The doc only comes once a week, so she finds herself practicing medicine and since Patience can't, delivering babies too. As a doula I am always drawn to stories about midwives, especially when they're also historical fiction. I have read Patricia Harman's memoirs as well and loved her writing so I had to read this series. I loved the first book in this series and still very much enjoyed this one, but I just was as in love with Becky or her story. Onderdeel van de reeks(en)Hope River (2)

HTML: The USA Today bestselling author of The Midwife of Hope River returns with a heartfelt sequel, a novel teeming with life and full of humor and warmth, one that celebrates the human spirit. The Great Depression has hit West Virginia hard. Men are out of work; women struggle to feed hungry children. Luckily, Nurse Becky Myers has returned to care for them. While she can handle most situations, Becky is still uneasy helping women deliver their babies. For these mothers-to-be, she relies on an experienced midwife, her dear friend Patience Murphy. Though she is happy to be back in Hope River, time and experience have tempered Becky's cheerfulness-as tragedy has destroyed the vibrant spirit of her former employer Dr Isaac Blum, who has accompanied her. Patience too has changed. Married and expecting a baby herself, she is relying on Becky to keep the mothers of Hope River safe. But becoming a midwife and ushering precious new life into the world is not Becky's only challenge. Her skills and courage will be tested when a calamitous forest fire blazes through a Civilian Conservation Corps camp. And she must find a way to bring Isaac back to life and rediscover the hope they both need to go on. Full of humor and compassion, The Reluctant Midwife is a moving tribute to the power of optimism and love to overcome the most trying circumstances and times, and is sure to please fans of the poignant Call the Midwife series. .Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |

In the end, I couldn't finish this book because it felt slow and, despite the subject matter, a bit too Hallmark for me. The pregnancies were a bit graphic at times and redundant. I thought the slow burn romance between Dr. Blum and the main character was sweet, but after a certain point, I was only reading to see if they'd get together and skimmed the other pages (outright skipping some of the birth scenes). That said, I learned a lot about placentas in this book and, thanks to The Reluctant Midwife was able to yell at a TV show when they forgot to consider the afterbirth. ( )
