This book is about the Japanese language written from the perspective of English-speaking students. It provides a systematic overview of the major components of the modern language, giving particular attention to areas of basic importance in the learning task, and is designed to complementlanguage-teaching materials by offering a coherent general framework within which the individual details of the language can be accommodated. The main chapters of the book deal with pronunciation, the writing system, vocabulary, grammar and discourse; sample topics include English loanwords inJapanese, word-and-phrase-accentuation, the role of the various Japanese scripts, vertical and horizontal writing, semantic contrasts between Japanese and English words, honorifics, numeral classifiers and grammatical 'particles', male and female speech and social formulas. A preliminary chapterplaces the language in its cultural and linguistic setting, and the book also discusses pedagogical issues such as the place of romanization, the use of character dictionaries, and the acquisition of the informal an formal styles. Addressed primarily to undergraduate learners, the book will also beof interest to teachers and to other readers who wish to obtain a general picture of this increasingly important language.
