New York Times bestseller

More than 100,000 copies in print

Completed just two days before Louis Zamperini's death at age ninety-seven, Don't Give Up, Don't Give In shares a lifetime of wisdom, insight, and humor from "one of the most incredible American lives of the past century" (People). Zamperini's story has touched millions through Laura Hillenbrand's biography Unbroken and its blockbuster movie adaptation directed by Angelina Jolie. Now, in his own words, Zamperini reveals with warmth and great charm the essential values and lessons that sustained him throughout his remarkable journey.

He was a youthful troublemaker from California who turned his life around to become a 1936 Olympian. Putting aside his track career, he volunteered for the army before Pearl Harbor and was thrust into World War II as a B-24 bombardier. While on a rescue mission, his plane went down in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, where he survived against all odds, drifting two thousand miles in a small raft for forty-seven days. His struggle was only beginning: Zamperini was captured by the Japanese, and for more than two years he courageously endured torture and psychological abuse in a series of prisoner-of-war camps. He returned home to face more dark hours, but in 1949 Zamperini's life was transformed by a spiritual rebirth that would guide him through the next sixty-five years of his long and happy life. Louis Zamperini's Don't Give Up, Don't Give In is an extraordinary last testament that captures the wisdom of a life lived to the fullest.

I read Unbroken so I was interested in learning more about Louis Zamperini. It was an interesting story but not as thrilling as Unbroken. ( )

Sometimes, extraordinary tales are also true. Louis Zamperini was a living, breathing example of resilience and determination to never give up. Beyond survival, Zamperini’s life demonstrates imperfection and acceptance, handling circumstances beyond our control, finding purpose, admitting fault and taking responsibility. In addition to US and World History, this historical figure brings meaning and depth to writing autobiographies, character education, leadership, service, and so much more.

The publisher’s website offers educator resources for teachers and librarians (https://www.harpercollins.com/9780062368331/dont-give-up-dont-give-in), but the links seem to take you on a wild goose chase so finding anything useful was nearly impossible. I found the greatest variety of links to lesson plans and instructional ideas on Pinterest (https://www.pinterest.com/search/pins/?q=lesson%20plans%20Louis%20Zamperini&rs=typed&0=lesson|typed&1=plans|typed&2=Louis|typed&3=Zamperini|typed).

Some unexpected finds included quotes on goodreads.com (https://www.goodreads.com/work/quotes/41449346-don-t-give-up-don-t-give-in-lessons-from-an-extraordinary-life), 4 Lessons in Manliness (https://www.goodreads.com/work/quotes/41449346-don-t-give-up-don-t-give-in-lessons-from-an-extraordinary-life), digital storytelling (https://www.awesomestories.com/asset/view/Louis-Zamperini-Life-Story), a leadership blog (https://prepforum.wordpress.com/2015/01/05/4-lessons-from-the-life-of-louis-zamperini/), and one of many documentaries, The Great Zamperini is a CBS Sports special produced during the 1998 Olympic Winter Games in Japan (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aEGL-wyz1yk). This book is full of "proverbs", each accompanied with a short story from Louis Zamperini's life. I got to know him just a little more, a little better than I had previously, from reading "Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption". A sweet, fun, and interesting little book. ( )
