"In the first century A.D., during Domitian's reign, Flavia Albia is ready for a short break from her family. So, in July, she returns to Rome, leaving them at their place on the coast. Albia, the daughter of Marcus Didius Falco, now retired as private informer, has taken up her father's former profession and it's time to get back to work. The first order business, however, is the corpse found in a chest sent as part of a large lot to be sold by the Falco family auction house. As the senior family representative in Rome, it falls upon Albia to find out who, why, and by whom. At the same time, her potential young man, Faustus, comes looking for help with his friend Sextus's political campaign. Between the auction business and Roman politics, it's not quite clear which one is the more under-handed and duplicitous. Both, however, are tied together by the mysterious body in the chest, and if Albia isn't able to solve that mystery, it won't be the only body to drop"--… (meer)

An enjoyable and interesting well-written story ( )

At the end of “Enemies At Home” I’d started to warm to Falco’s daughter, Flavia Albia, a little, if only because she finally seemed human: vulnerable and willing to open up to others.

I’d hoped that “Deadly Election” would help me understand Flavia Albia a bit more and finally enjoy this series as much as I enjoyed the Falco series.

I listened to two hours of an eleven hour book before finally giving up.

I admit it. I don’t like Flavia Albia.

The success of the book depends on seeing Flavia Albia as a witty, brave, and intelligent confidante, who guides me through the streets of Rome and amuses me with her insights into people and places while filling me with admiration for the daring and tenacious way she goes about solving mysteries.

In the first two hours of the audiobook version of “Deadly Election” I listened to her slag off politicians, give cynical descriptions of almost everyone she met, describe her ambivalence about being Roman, investigate the death of a man as if he were a jigsaw puzzle and show a muckraker’s zeal for digging up sleaze on political candidates.

I decided that Faliva Albia is someone I would try to avoid being seated next to at a dinner party and that I have no further interest in what happens to her. So this becomes the third book this year that I didn’t finish.

I’ve decided that, instead of persevering with Flavia Albia, I’ll return to the original Falco series. It’s more than twenty-five years since I read “The Silver Pigs”. I think it’s time to go back and see if I still enjoy it. ( )

Another tale of ancient times - this time, describing the election process. Not as interesting as previous novels about Flavia, but worth listening to. ( )

[Flavia Albia talking about Marcus Didius Falco and Helena Justina and that she's not going back to further recuperate.]

Still, I love them. They adopted me when I was lice-ridden and desperate, a difficult teenager to whom they were loyal and affectionate when others would quail. They had turned a lost soul from far-away Britain into a fairly normal Roman daughter. I was now twenty-nine and an independent widow, but I had whined and argued to come back from the coast, worming away at it like my two younger sisters when they wanted new sandals.
'Go, then. We'll keep your bed made up!' the parents scoffed. So now I had to live up to my claim of being fit. (chapter one)
