Life is boring when you live in the real world, instead of starring in your own book series. Owen knows that better than anyone, what with the real world's homework and chores. But everything changes the day Owen sees the impossible happen -- his classmate Bethany climb out of a book in the library. It turns out Bethany's half-fictional and has been searching every book she can find for her missing father, a fictional character. Bethany can't let anyone else learn her secret, so Owen makes her a deal: All she has to do is take him into a book in Owen's favorite Kiel Gnomenfoot series, and he'll never say a word. Besides, visiting the book might help Bethany find her father. Or it might just destroy the Kiel Gnomenfoot series, reveal Bethany's secret to the entire world, and force Owen to live out Kiel Gnomenfoot's final (very final) adventure.… (meer)

I love the concept and the story overall, but the writing bothered me. It wasn't very good, and seemed like the author was thinking "oh, I'm just writing for 12-year-olds, they won't care if the writing's just okay." Or maybe that's just James Riley's style? I probably would have enjoyed this book more if I was 10 at first read, not a young adult. ( )

This book is full of adventure. This is a fantasy book that really makes you feel like you are right there with the characters. I recommend this book. This book was fantastic. I caught myself, many times, getting mad at characters or picking sides. This just goes to show how invested I was in this nook and how well written and displayed it was. ( )

Story Thieves is a wonderful novel to truly bring all realms of fantasy and fiction to life. This text, while challenging, embraces the confusing nature of switching narrators and has readers pay close attention to detail. It is one out of several in the series and helps to introduce main characters and events that will only be added to later in the series. I enjoyed reading this book, but one must know that it requires a fine eye and attention to detail since it can be a bit chaotic. I would recommend this book for older children in the age range of high-achieving 5th graders all the way up to 9th grade potentially. It is a very exciting read while not having the romance that is usually included in novels. This can truly catch the eye of someone who is really big on fantasy and all the differences and plays on different books. This novel is truly a must read for fantasy lovers. ( )

James Riley was born in 1977in Connecticut. He is a known author and American Novelist who is super famous from this book. This story has three different settings; Owen and Bethany's school, Jonathon Porterhouse's house, and in the seventh Kiel Gnomefoot book. The plot is that Owen and Bethany are in a library. Bethany tells Owen that she is a fictional character who can travel books and he was intrigued; so they made a deal and Owen jumped in the book with her. Owen started talking to other characters like he was told not to so the Magister found out about him and Owen stole some of Bethany's powers. Owen has to pretend to be Kiel because kids are reading Gnomefoot series. They have to defeat Dr. Verity because that is what the series is about. The story goes on with Bethany and Owen going through other adventures. The theme is Good vs. Evil. The author uses protagonists and antagonists in the book. The summary of this book is Owen finds out that his friend Bethany can "book jump" and he wants to enter the Kiel Gnomefoot series. Bethany allows him to come with him on her search for her father who disappeared in a book when she was a young girl. Two quotes that provide evidence for my comments are "I knew that there was something like this out there, because if there wasn't, then life is just dental floss and vegetables and word problems. That can't be everything." - Owen. Another is "It's all just the product of someone's imagination, a writer, an author, his name is Jonathan Porterhouse. He made you all up. You don't really exist." - Owen.
