"This collection of short, action-filled stories of the Old West's most egregiously badly behaved female outlaws, gamblers, soiled doves, and other wicked women by award-winning Western history author Chris Enss offers a glimpse into Western Women's experience that's less sunbonnets and more six-shooters. During the late nineteenth century, while men were settling the new frontier and rushing off to the latest boom towns, women of easy virtue found wicked lives west of the Mississippi when they followed fortune hunters seeking gold and land in an unsettled territory. Prostitutes and female gamblers hoped to capitalize on the vices of the intrepid pioneers. Pulling together stories of ladies caught in the acts of mayhem, distraction, murder, and highway robbery, it will include famous names like Belle Starr and Big Nose Kate, as well as lesser known characters"--… (meer)

This book is a little different from the romance, YA and NA books I've been reading lately. It was like a breath of fresh air to read about all these strong and amazing women, who made their place in history by making their life in the Wild West.

The book seems well-researched, and each woman was described in a vivid and entertaining manner. Bios can be dry, this wasn't. Each chapter was about one woman, and the author managed to pack the important facts into each chapter to bring the person to life and telling a story. ( )

Wicked Women: Notorious, Mischievous, and Wayward Ladies from the Old West isn't about your usual Western woman's pilgrimage across the plains: it's a randy, rowdy survey of less-well-behaved female outlaws, gamblers, and other wicked women, and it provides a lively alternative to the usual focus on pioneer homemakers.

During the late nineteenth century, while men were settling the frontier, such women led 'wicked' lives when they followed fortune seekers. Their stories have been widely scattered under various headings, so it's refreshing to find a collection of short, action-packed stories of the Old West here, offering biographical sketches paired with Western history and spiced with insights on purposes and people.

Speaking of 'spice', fun black and white vintage photos and illustrations from the author's own historic collection of images and historical libraries enhances the value and appeal of her coverage, making it a recommendation for collections ranging from women's history and issues to Western frontier sagas. That was definitely an interesting bunch of stories. I've always loved reading about the Old West (not the Wild West, but the real stories that made up the 'Wild West' stories) and this book is a nice addition to that reading list. It also helps that it was a very well written book too. Each of the stories was done differently, some with the woman's own words and others in an almost fictional story type of prose, while other of the women's stories were presented in the traditional non-fiction sort of way.

When I picked it up I thought that it'd contain only more of the well known women of the Old West, but instead there were so many stories of women who I'd never heard of before to go along with the ones that I had like Calamity Jane. One of the women who I'd never heard of was Josie Washburn, and that was definitely my favorite story from the book.

It was a fun read, and nice and easy to pick up and put down if needed since each of the stories was very nicely contained.

I got this advanced galley through Netgalley on behalf Globe Pequot/TwoDot. ( )
