Centuries ago, the human race fought its first great war against an alien race, and lost. A tiny population of human beings fled to distant Safehold. Centuries later, their descendants have forgotten their history; for them, life has been an eternal Middle Ages, ruled by the Church of God Awaiting, whose secret purpose is to prevent the re-emergence of industrial civilization. But not all of Safehold's founders were on board with this plan. Those dissidents left behind their own secret legacies. One of those is Merlyn Athrawes, cybernetic avatar of one of Earth's long-dead defenders, now reawakened after a thousand years to restart human progress and reclaim our place in the universe. Merlyn has intervened in the small Safeholdian realm of Charis, seeding it with ideas and innovations and helping it to rise to challenge the hegemony of the Church. It's been a long and bloody fight, but aided by a stream of inventions--breech-loading rifles, signal rockets, claymore mines, new approaches to manufacturing and supply-Charis and its few allies seem to have finally gained the upper hand. Now major realms have begun to consider switching sides. To all these ends, Merlyn Athrawes has been everywhere, under multiple disguises and wielding hidden powers. The secret of who and what he is has been closely held. But a new player has arrived, one who knows many secrets-including Merlyn's own.… (meer)

The fact that there's an 82-page list of characters at the end, followed by 21 pages of glossary tells you how overblown this one is. It's a good story, as usual from Weber with recognizable elements of historical battles woven in (I could have done without the lesson on how the Union lost the Civil War Battle of the Crater), but there's just so much exposition that you can skip a page of characters talking to each other or thinking aloud from time to time without missing what you can learn just from context in the next pages. I have gotten seriously tired of how many words are used to advance the storyline so little. We've seen people introduced to the inner circle a few times. It's risky and hard for them, we get it, move on. It's a big world, with people on both sides and lots of emotions. Pick a few important ones, and move the story along. Both the events of the story and the character dialog has gotten very predictable; if you read the first seven, you could probably write the dialog and be correct about every major event before it happens.

I liked the world, it had great potential for story telling. But this story has gotten so bogged down that I skimmed large sections, and eventually looked up a plot summary online rather than finish. And yes, I correctly guessed at the entire end state of the book before reading past the 40% mark.

If you love the series for all of the character dialogue and detailed exploration of weapons development in an early industrial era, have a go at this one. For the rest - quit now if you haven't already. The issues with this one were there in the last several books, but have just gotten worse. ( )

Really bloody well done. Pages of characters and a glossary: Always useful in a Weber series, and present. Can't remember how many books this most recent one's into the set, but the whole read's been a blast, and this one *seriously* begins to turn the screws. ( )

How much is story

...and how much is mind numbing detail? According to my Kindle, from 84% to 96% was a list of characters; the remainder was a glossary and charts detailing the religious orders.

I like the story. Mr Weber has a way of writing that can be engaging. But the scenery is overwhelming the story. The cast list equals over 10% of the total pages in the book!!! The maps are practically illegible.

Wait...how much did I pay for this?!? Damn.

Oh crap. We STILL don't know what is hiding under the damn temple!!! I know there is at least one more book...there could be TWO. Or THREE!!!

I'm going to buy the next book, because I ^do^ like Mr Weber's writing. But I am going to recommend that anyone who has not started the series...turn away. Save yourself. ( )
