This morning I saw a star twinkling just over the fore-yard the first since the beginning of May. There is considerable discontent among the crew many of whom are anxious to get back home to be in time for the herring season when labour always commands a high price upon the Scotch coast. One of Doyle's "weird and imaginative" works, The Captain of the Pole-Star tells a creepy tale set in the high north on a whaling vessel. It was likely informed by Doyle's own experiences in the Arctic -- also note that the first-person narrator is a doctor! The story is pretty good but not terribly scary, which I appreciated. I also liked the nautical terminology, given that the story is set on a ship. Worth checking out. ( )
