Although this book does mention Napoleon's indiscretions, it glosses over Josephine's stating "nothing was ever proven". I am the first to believe that Josephine was not the harlot that history (especially English history) had branded her as being, but Hippolyte Charles living with Josephine at Mal Maison while Napoleon was in Egypt is pretty hefty proof that she did have her own indiscretions, & they were heavily acknowledged at the time. Plus the book fails to provide any insight as to how Josephine had provided for her children, or came to have her own salon between the time she left prison & the time she came to know Bonaparte. Yes the book is for juvenile readers---but please!
The book did stress the devotion she had for her children & Bonaparte, but without relating any specific incidents. It is not a book I would really recommend, even to a younger reader. ( )

This is the book I recommend when asked for a biography of Napoleon and Josephine. The author shrewdly divides the book into two parts: Book One: Napoleon in Love with Josephine; and Book Two: Josephine in Love with Napoleon. This accurately reflects the power shift that occurred in their marriage, and the growth they experienced as individuals and as a couple. A very good read, and well done. ( )
