AR: 2.3 Jesse's parents spend the day telling Jesse Bear he'd better not get wet as he finds water in a variety of forms to tempt him. The overly strict parents keep interjecting the title in word balloons, and an extra, non-rhyming line gets thrown into the text verse regularly. I found it annoying to read aloud as I staggered between the couplets and the extra junk. No fun. Genre: Fantasy Age Appropriateness: Primary Review: This picture book is a good examle of fantasy because it includes a family of bears and a litle bear who wants to cool off in the summer. Kids can relate to wanting to play in water and it is believable even though the bears are substituted in the place of a "real" family. Media: Mixed media Critique: Genre: This story contains a family of bears that talk and act like people. The bears are very purposeful because children and families can relate to their actions. The story could not really happen because the animals can talk and have human characteristics. However, it still proves purposeful because the author creates characters and a setting that readers can relate to. Character: Jesse Bear presents a character that children can relate to. He struggles with wanting to get wet, but his told by his parents he is not allowed to. He is a round character because the reader knows most about him through his actions and desires.
