A new student joins his class for a field trip to the Empire State Building, gets lost, and finds his way to meet his partner and the rest of their group. Fascinating perspectives, subway facts, and details of the routes and tunnels make this an excellent read - not only for transit nerds. ( ) children's graphic novel (toon graphics for visual readers) nyc subway history, kids getting separated from their class on a fieldtrip and becoming friends. appealing and educational adventure perfect for reluctant readers and any other kids. Red-haired Amelia and brown-skinned Pablo are in 2nd or 3rd grade (maybe? I feel like if they were younger there'd need to be more parent chaperones present) and the page layouts are very dynamic and engaging. Backmatter provides additional info about the building of the subway and interesting blurbs about the author and illustrator too. Pablo and his family have just moved to New York City. His first day at his new school, he discovers the class has a field trip planned on the subway to the Empire State Building. Although he is paired up with a buddy, Alicia, they get a bit lost when they accidentally get on the wrong train! This is a graphic novel and it was very good. There is history of the subway and the Empire State Building, along with real historical photos included. I’ve only been to New York once (and I was on the subway, but found it pretty confusing!), but found the information really interesting. The story itself was also about friendship, but really I think the point was the historical information (geared toward younger readers, but still really interesting). geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
