Fiction. Horror. HTML:

The Incendium Maleficarum has been lost and Carter Weston presumed dead, but the story of That Which Should Not Be is only just beginning. Now Carter's only daughter, Rachel Jones, and his oldest friend, Henry Armitage, must embark on an epic journey that will take them from the hell-blasted Tunguska forest to the catacombs of Paris to the shores of the Scottish Isles. They are in a race against time, for in France, strange murders and whispers of occult rituals herald the rise of an ancient evil bent on plunging the world into eternal darkness. It is up to Rachel and Henry to learn Carter's fate, recover the Incendium Maleficarum, and perhaps even save the world.

Talley's sequel to his previous Lovecraftian novel "That Which Should Not Be" is equally entertaining. Whereas the first book had a stories-within-the-story structure, this one is a narrative consisting mainly of journal entries written by the three protagonists. Also, this book is as much an adventure story as it is a horror novel, with some good, pulpy action in 1933 Europe. The result is a satisfying conclusion to Carter Weston's story. ( )

Won this book from LibraryThings giveaways.

This is the 2nd in a series. I did not read the first.

He Who Walks in Shadow has been referred to an a 'Lovecraftian' style book and I can see that from the plot. Dealing with ancient beings, the book is a quick read with moments of 'oh I didn't see that coming'.

Due to it being a second book, some of the characters have been fleshed out already in the first novel so it was hard to get a good feel for them.

Written as journal entries, we read the accounts of Carter Wester, his daughter Rachel Jones and his best friend Henry Armitage as they continue their quest to find the Incendium Maleficarum (a very nefarious ancient text).

Pretty much standard Indiana Jones vs the Supernatural with several, 'oh my' moments.

Read it if you are in to H.P. Lovecraft but maybe start with the first book (although this can be read as a stand alone book). ( )

When requesting this book I failed to realize it was the 2nd book in a series. While the author does a good job of explaining who characters are and filling in the information, it probably didn't help my impression of the book to start with the end.

The book was a slow trudge to read. I found the diary and article format to be interesting at the start, but quickly grew dull for me. I took literal months to finish this novel, which isn't a great length, because it felt like a slog to read it. While the plot was interesting, the slow pacing of the format kept it from being edge or your seat reading.

This one wasn't for me, but fans of Lovecraftian mythos who aren't deterred by the format will probably enjoy the book. ( )
