A lot of stuff happens as a hole between our world and Leeside lets all sorts of magical beings through, not the least of which is a banshee who arrives in chapter one to predict our hero's imminent demise. The fantasy gimmick of multicultural magical beings displaced to America is reminiscent of Gaiman's American Gods, combined with the confusion of bloodlines that is the American melting pot. One or two chapters rise above the fray, but Friesner simply piles too much brouhaha into this short novel. As a result, none of it carries any emotional weight. This most evident in a scene near the end that clearly was meant to be a major event, but is woefully under established and executed. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

This is a classic humorous urban fantasy from the early '90s, the first in a trilogy and it turns out this was a reread for me. I read it when it first came out but didn't remember until I started on it.
And I am very glad to say that overall it aged well. There are some technological and pop culture references that kind of stand out and age it, but the world-building is so strong that it pulls you along if you let it.
The humor holds up really well, the characters are a lot of fun and there is enough grounding in folk tales and lore to make a solid story as well.
I am glad I found this book again...now I just have to track down copies of the remaining two books in the series. ( )
