I can appreciate Strindberg's contribution to psychological realism and naturalism while still asserting that his characters are disturbingly dark, and unpleasant to spend time with. Influenced, in part, by Strindberg, O'Neill created characters that had charm and humor in addition to their psychological baggage. No charm or humor here. Strindberg's characters are just walking Rorschach inkblots -- with the same dimensionality and the same appeal. I read two plays in this collection, including Miss Julie, and refused to go further.
