Excellent bibliographical essay, covers tribal history, pre-European, Colonial, Revolutionary, and modern communities. Distinguishes sources which provide "lore" from those recounting "facts", and from those shaped by such theories as Frederick Jackson Turner's "frontier thesis". Hawkins is omitted from the Bibliography, as are French sources (cf Huron). I would have liked to know if Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758)wrote anything ethnographic after spending 9 years with the Indian schools in Stockbridge. Also, I find no records of the British Indian Commissioners. The author concedes the inadequacy of the documents, without suggesting solutions, such as psychohistory or deconstruction in light of narrative "lore" and myth.
