This book contains The Metamorphoses, The Elegies, The Letters of The Heroines, Ars Amatoria, The Festivals, the Letters From Exile, and Invective Against Ibis, and is over 400 pages. The Metamorphoses make up the most of the book, containing a good variety of stories from mythology. The second longest piece, without checking, is the Art of Love, which was amusing to read. The translations come from a variety of different people, Golding does the Metamorphoses, Gower the Festivals, Christopher Marlowe of playwright fame does the Elegies, Wolferston the Ars, and various others translate the shorter works. All the translations do a good job of keeping the rhythm intact, and there are few phrases that seem out of place. The Marlowe translated verses have a particular liveliness about them, I didn't realise before that he had done this sort of work in addition to being a top class playwright. I found the Metamorphoses grating in places, but for the most part it flowed quite well. I would recommend this book to those interested in Greek and Roman mythology, but there are better poets to read, (or so it comes across from some of these translations), even who write on a similar subject matter, such as Keats' Endymion and Hyperion, which should be, to quote the former work, "a joy forever". Whereas, I can't help thinking, that even if I read the original, and was fluent in Latin, that Ovid still wouldn't quite be comparable. ( ) geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
