I grew up listening to the The Pretenders, but never knew much about Chrissie Hynde or her band. As with her music, she just lays it all bare out there and lets her audience decide, Part inspiring and part cautionary tale of the perils of rock and roll--I grimaced a LOT--but worth the read. Her lists of her early musical heroes and the book's photos are interesting too. ( )
lol in one review of this book someone recounts "Why are: drugs, random sex with strangers, hook ups with friends, the song-writing process, transatlantic journeys, the punk scene...So boring?" & while this would seem to be a no-brainer recipe for a GREAT READ at the end of the day all of this stuff is just as boring as large glasses of water, dead bedrooms, abstinence, staying put, & slow jams. actually i might prefer the latter. anyway, it's more about the person & chrissie hynde's ghostwriter just isn't doin it for me. & speakin of doin it for me, why am i doing this to myself? reading so many music memoirs? the death drive is real y'all. pass on this one. pretenders still slap tho.... adios ( )
Reckless is a great title for this book AND for Chrissie Hynde.
This woman has been through some serious shit. Most of it self inflicted and just plain crazy. STDs, drugs and Rock & Roll-she's been through it all.
The book ends after two of The Pretenders died, (a long time ago), and I think that's apt because that's when her recklessness ended, (mostly), too.
Growing up in the sixties allowed her to do a lot of things that could not be done now. You can't knock on the windows of cars and ask someone to take you somewhere, not without worrying you'll end up in a dumpster behind a 711, anyway. You can't hang out with hard bikers without putting yourself in danger. (That one was as true then as it is now, and believe me, THAT was some real danger.)
Overall, I'm glad I listened to Chrissie's story. It's a story of using caution and NOT being reckless. Not if you want to continue to live. I liked that she remained herself throughout and took responsibility for her actions. This story is not pretty and it's not for everyone, but I enjoyed listening to Rosanna Arquette narrate this crazy lady's reckless life. ( )
I was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio just over a decade after the author. The book brought back so many memories of North East Ohio. The ultimate rock and roll radio station -- WMMS, Blossom Music Center, Captain Penny, Barnaby, Chippewa Lake Park, and of course the red brick street where I grew up (Vineyard Avenue and there are still red bricks). There were also other memories of the motorcycle gangs riding the streets, and surprisingly, putting out a house fire on my street before the Cleveland Fire Department could respond. Hynde has different memories of the biker gangs. The 1960s and 1970s were not good decades for Cleveland.
Hynde does not sugar coat her life and the events. She takes responsibility for what she did and what she did while intoxicated. The origin of some of her song lyrics are explained in the context of the book. It is a well written and personal biography. She explains her life to whoever is reading in an informal and interesting manner. This ranks up with Just Kids and M-Train for those in their fifth decade of life. There are many memories not only of Cleveland and Akron, but also the players in the punk movement from Iggy Pop The Sex Pistols.
I actually listened to this book from Audible. It is read by Rosanna Arquette who read well enough that the listener might even think it was the author reading the books. She seemed to capture the emotions and the spirit Hynde's life. With the exception of repeatedly mispronouncing Akron as Ack-KRON (instead of ACK-rin), the reading was exceptional. A very worthwhile read for those who remember East 55th and Euclid being precious.
