Fantasy. Juvenile Fiction. Juvenile Literature. HTML:From John Flanagan, author of the worldwide bestselling Ranger's Apprenticeâ??the first in a new prequel series featuring one of our favorite Rangers, Halt!

When Halt and Crowley discover that the ambitious Morgarath has been infiltrating the Rangers in order to corrupt the Corps, the young Rangers travel north to find Prince Duncan, seeking a royal warrant to stop Morgarath before it is too late. By weakening the Rangers, the most powerful force in support of the King, Morgarath plans to steal the throne.
Yet when Halt and Crowley arrive in Gorlan, they discover just how close Morgarathâ??s scheme is to success. Morgarath has a plan to discredit the Prince and alienate him from his father. At the same time, the Baron of Gorlan has been conspiring to win the trust and admiration of the Council of Barons to further his plan. If the young Rangers are to prevent the coup from succeeding, they will have to tread a dangerous path, which leads them to a thrilling climax at the annual tournament at Gorlan, where a series of bitter duels must be fought and won.
This origin story brings readers to a time before Will was an apprentice, and lays the groundwork for the epic battles that will culminate with The Ruins of Gorlan and The Burning Bridgeâ??Books 1 and 2 of the Rangerâ??s Apprentice series.

I was attracted to this book by the author's name and that he is probably of Irish origin and I knew many Irish ended up in Australia or America. I also was a young adult librarian. I fell for it at once and started recommending it. As happens, once you personally recommend a book, you find yourself purchasing multiple copies especially in a series, just to keep the series complete. Despite my efforts, many of my copies are now missing.

FROM PUBLISHER'S WEEKLY: Fifteen-year-old Will, orphaned as a child, and his close friends anxiously await Choosing Day, when each will be chosen-or not-for apprenticeship in one of several schools. Those not chosen wind up as farm labor to help feed the castledwellers. ""It was a fate Will feared more than anything."" He entertains notions of entering Battleschool like his classmate-and sometime adversary-Horace. But because of Will's diminutive stature, and a knack for climbing, hiding and all things clandestine, he is instead chosen to be a Ranger, under the tutelage of Halt, who years earlier exiled the evil Morgarath to the land of the Mountains of Rain and Night. As Will learns archery and stealth techniques, he makes peace with Horace (who is being tormented by older classmates at Battleschool), and the two must then travel with a contingent of Rangers and warriors to fight invading, ""almost invincible"" Kalkara-bearlike assassins sent by Morgarath to kill Halt. It's great going back to the beginning of Halt's time as a Ranger, and getting to see the events that lead up to the major plots of the original series. The story, writing, and characters are all as compelling as the rest of the series! ( )

I really liked this book, but I found that there were so many similarities between this book and the many others that John has created. It almost feels formulaic at this point of reading them now. I still love learning more about Halt's past. Honestly, the battle between Arald and Morgarath was my favorite part of the whole book because it showed just how devious Morgarath is as a character. I will be looking forward to reading the second book in The Early Years. ( )

A prequel to the Ranger's Apprentice series, starring Halt and Crowley. In this book, they seek out other Rangers. who have been summarily dismissed by the King, but in reality by the throne-seeking Morgarath. Morgarath has also kidnapped Prince Duncan and hired an impostor to raid nearby lands and discredit Duncan. Crowley, while young emerges as the future leader of the Rangers Corp, and along with Halt's help, bring matters to a head at the tournament with Baron Arald and Morgarath in an exciting showdown. While it was a good buddy book, Flanagan's other beloved characters are missing from this new series, and the supporting cast did not measure up (yet.) ( )

John Flanagan's latest book is another amazing addition to the Ranger's Apprentice series, and I highly enjoyed reading it! I loved the chance to read about the origins of some of the main characters from the previous series, especially Halt and Crowley, who are as hilarious and awesome as ever. :) The story was just as exciting and entertaining as the other books in the series, and I can't wait to read the rest of the prequels!

A wonderful addition to a great book was the fact that I got to meet the author in person and have him sign my copy! Since he was in my area for his U.S. tour, I was able to have the amazing experience of hearing him talk about his books (including several that are not yet published), and read my signed and dedicated copy of this book, which is absolutely awesome! :) ( )
