"The sixth book in the bestselling British madcap time-travelling series, served with a dash of wit that seems to be everyone's cup of tea. Behind the seemingly innocuous facade of St. Mary's Institute of Historical Research, a different kind of academic work is taking place. Just don't call it "time travel"-these historians "investigate major historical events in contemporary time." And they aren't your harmless eccentrics either; a more accurate description, as they ricochet around history, might be unintentional disaster-magnets. The Chronicles of St. Mary's tells the madcap adventures of Madeleine Maxwell and her compatriots-Director Bairstow, Leon "Chief" Farrell, Mr. Markham, and many more-as they travel through time, saving the St. Mary's Institute (too often by the very seat of their pants) and thwarting time-travelling terrorists, all the while leaving plenty of time for tea. In What Could Possibly Go Wrong? Max is back, with a new husband, a new job, and a training regime that cannot fail. to go wrong. Take one interim chief training officer, add five recruits, and mix with Joan of Arc, a baby mammoth, a duplicitous Father of History, a bombed rat, Stone Age hunters, a couple of passing policemen who should have better things to do, and Dick the Turd. Stir well, bring to a boil-and wait for the bang! Skyhorse Publishing, under our Night Shade and Talos imprints, is proud to publish a broad range of titles for readers interested in science fiction (space opera, time travel, hard SF, alien invasion, near-future dystopia), fantasy (grimdark, sword and sorcery, contemporary urban fantasy, steampunk, alternative history), and horror (zombies, vampires, and the occult and supernatural), and much more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller, a national bestseller, or a Hugo or Nebula award-winner, we are committed to publishing quality books from a diverse group of authors"--… (meer)

Taylor, Jodi. What Could Possibly Go Wrong? Accent Press, 2015. Chronicles of St. Mary’s 6.
Newly married Max has a new Job at St. Mary’s. She is the latest, no doubt temporary, training officer for a new crop of historians (don’t call them time travelers). As you might guess from the title, not much goes smoothly. How about a quick trip to the Battle of Bosworth Field? Keep an eye out for Dick the Turd, uh, make that Richard the Third. And remember, he is not supposed to win. ( )

As a result of events in No Time Like the Past, Max has been given light duties and she and Dr Peterson have swapped roles, meaning that Max is now in charge of five shiny new trainees. As with everything St Mary's does, the training programme is straightforward in theory only ...

Every time I pick up one of the Chronicles of St Mary's, I'm reminded why I love this series so much. What may superficially appear like popcorn fiction is actually a piece of tremendously accomplished writing. In no other series have I cared so deeply for the characters and and laughed so much, nor been reduced to tears so often, and the history is always enlightening. What could easily become farce in the hands of less-skilled authors is never short of entertaining, and provides much-needed comic relief when everything goes disastrously wrong, as it so frequently does when the historians of St Mary's are involved. This book in particular acts as a reminder that the majority of history is actually quite horrible, and that a historian's job is to watch people die in endlessly varied (and usually painful) ways. Some part of me wishes this marvellous series will never end. ( )

What could go wrong? With the crew from St. Mary's - everything. Simple training jumps turn into chaos. I love this series about time-traveling historians ( )

Oooooh kids... you gotta place nice or someone's gonna lose an eye or an arm. Play by Hoyle's Rules, at least! Oh gosh. I guess something went wrong.

This book had a whole bunch of great time-travel locations, some of which I'd give an arm to visit, too. To see the Neanderthals and Modern Humans coexisting and working together? See the harsh conditions and the Mammoths? Maybe sneak one back to the future? No, no, we wouldn't do that. Certainly not. That's against regs and watch your feet... it looks like someone left us a little present in the hallway... Markham???? Is this your work???

Of course, there were a whole bunch of other great locations, and who would have believed that someone might have signed off for a bunch of stupid kids to be dropped in the middle of the battle where Richard the Third bit it. Not me!

I'm really loving this series. I think it might possibly go on forever, if only we could keep some of these poor recruits and old-timers alive. Yeah. There's more death. Two, this time. This is getting hard on my poor heart.

At least there's a really, really good surprise at the very end of the book. I mean, at first glance, it could be sooo great, right? And then there was that bit of foreshadowing after a certain nailed-it exercise of Max's and no.... that couldn't be, could it???

Well, Max will go down as a legend and a... no, no spoilers. This series is just too good to miss. :) Perfect voice, perfect speed, and perfect locations. :) ( )

What Could Possibly Go Wrong.jpg"What Could Possibly Go Wrong" was a refreshing return to kind of St.Mary's Mayhem that go me hooked on the series in the first place.

Max is on light duties and has become the Training Officer, responsible for shaping five new recruits into Historians. It should be a safe, straight-forward job. How could anyone get into trouble while their the Training Officer? Silly question really, this is St. Mary's, nothing ever goes according to plan.

Max has revamped the training program to give recruits early exposure to actually going back in time so we pack in a lot of training trips in this novel. Most of them are chaotic fun - what's not to like about wooly mammoths, even if they are stampeding towards you? Wh0'd miss a trip to the Valley of the Kings - a simple observe and record, at least it was before it all went wrong.

I enjoy these high-spirited romps through history, but what keeps me coming back to St. Mary's is the way Jodi Taylor offsets the chaotic with jumps to times and places that are fundamentally unpleasant. This time we get to watch Joan of Arc burn. No punches are pulled. The full brutality of the day is made very clear. It was emotionally draining.

In Max's world, behind the flippancy and the insane experiments that usually result in things going bang unexpectedly, there is always an external threat and the possibility of betrayal. This time the betrayals are from surprising sources and, in once case, for unique and very original reasons.

I think this is one of the best books in the series. It gave me all the enjoyment I expected and a few surprises along the way.

I listened to the audiobook, narrated by Zara Ramm. She has become the voice of St. Mary's for me. Actually, she's ALL the voices of St.Mary's and she does them very well. I think this is the best way to experience St. Mary's.
