Until the very recent past, black people in America have been denied their history.The discovery of Black history, and its legitimization and acceptance into the body of American history, is progressing at this very time and has already immensely enriched our knowledge of our national past. Black history is begginning to serve whites as an antidote to centuries of racist indoctrination by providing essential knowledge without which a more truly democratic, nonracist society cannot be built. Black history is serving Blacks in a somewhat different sense by arousing pride in a legitimate past, enhancing self-respect and providing hoeroes and leaders with whom black people can identify.
