"Wuthering Heights" is a profoundly puzzling, haunting and disturbing book - one of the great curiosities as it is one of the great masterpieces of literature. Undoubtedly, it is a work of genius; yet after well over a hundred years of criticism and biographical research many of its riddles remain unsolved.
Emily Brontë is now, as in her lifetime, an enigma. Little is known about her outwardly uneventful life as a young and inexperienced parson's daughter in a remote Yorkshire village, although the intensity of her inner life must be beyond question. In the end we have to rely on her single novel and her poems, together with a very few eye-witness accounts, to tell us all we know of this independent, reserved but passionate woman.
At the end of this volume are printed more than sixty of Emily Brontë's poems, selected and edited by Philip Henderson. Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |
