Forgive me for misreading the title - I thought this was going to be about LL Bean's history. Instead, it's really a book about Leon Gorman who picked up the business after the death of his grandfather and uncle in the 1960's. Half the management systems under the sun are tried to varying levels of success. It would help if the narrative would comment on it's inconsistencies - Leon says he doesn't care about making money, but died incredibly rich. He doesn't want to pay the salaries demanded of professional managers, but hires tons of them. He doesn't want to build retail stores, but then builds several different types all over the world. These about-face moments are not reckoned with in the text.

What is the purpose of this book? ( )
