I continue to enjoy the Spenser series, as carried on by Ace Atkins. His writing style is quite different than Parker's, and Spenser is starting to feel like a slightly different character than the old scamp I used to love. Inevitably Spenser IS aging, and Atkins acknowledges that in ways Parker had not begun to. I think it's that the mythic quality is gone, except in occasional scenes involving Hawk. In this outing, Spenser is on the trail of a firebug who has caused the death of three Boston firefighters. As with Atkins' last Spenser adventure, Kickback, this one is loosely based on actual events. I have been reading Spencer books for quite a while. I don't think that I can distinguish the plot lines or stories among the 20 or more books that I have read in the series. If a reader picked up this book without having read the previous Spenser novels, they would not be at a significant disadvantage as far as understanding the characters. I really am looking for some type of change in the Spenser novels. In this book, Spencer searches for arsonists responsible for the deaths of three firemen as a result of a church fire. In the course of his investigation, Spencer spits out one-liners and literary references. Of course, he engages with customary fisticuffs with various heavies. Hawk is there to cover his back. Susan continues to be his soulmate, lover and confidant. Meh. Throughout the twisted case that develops as the Boston P.I. pursues a serial arsonist, Spenser and his friends are in control and smooth as ever. In this new novel Ace Atkins once again delivers Spenser true to form. Not just in character, but every bit an all-around satisfying well-paced mystery. Not much to say about this book, except that if you are looking for a solid writer of solid mysteries, look no further. Atkins is true to Robert B Parker’s vision of the Boston private investigator Spenser, and this book is a humorous and entertaining addition to an enjoyable series. If you haven’t read any others in the series, that’s okay because they stand alone, and this is a good one to enter Spenser’s world. Read and enjoy! HTML:Boston PI Spenser faces a hot case and a personal crisis in this adventure in Ace Atkins’ iconic New York Times bestselling series. The fire at a boarded-up Catholic church raged hot and fast, lighting up Boston’s South End and killing three firefighters who were trapped in the inferno. A year later, as the city prepares to honor their sacrifice, there are still no answers about how the deadly fire started. Most at the department believe it was just a simple accident: faulty wiring in a century-old building. But Boston firefighter Jack McGee, who lost his best friend in the blaze, suspects arson. McGee is convinced department investigators aren’t sufficiently connected to the city’s lowlifes to get a handle on who's behind the blaze—so he takes the case to Spenser. Spenser quickly learns not only that McGee might be right, but that the fire might be linked to a rash of new arsons, spreading through the city, burning faster and hotter every night. Spenser follows the trail of fires to Boston’s underworld, bringing him, his trusted ally Hawk, and his apprentice Sixkill toe-to-toe with a dangerous new enemy who wants Spenser dead, and doesn’t play by the city’s old rules. Spenser has to find the firebug before he kills again—and stay alive himself. Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |
