Following the themes set in Irredeemable comes a new series by Mark Waid. Imagine if Batman and Robin were father and son. Now imagine if this was set in 2015. Now imagine if Robin was a douchebag with daddy issues. Now imagine if he has to team up with his father to solve a mystery after breaking away from him. Since this is similar to Irredeemable than you'll get a good story. But you won't always get a fulfilling ending to the story.

Super-hero rivalry between father and son
Galahad, superhero of St Barrington, likes getting all the glory (the insufferable of the title?) after splitting up with his teammate (and father) Nocturnus.
This volume deals with super-villains trying to get at both of them by terrorising their nearest and dearest and fanning the anger that Galahad has for his father.
Astutely written and well-illustrated, it’s an entertaining read and worth a visit.

OK, I admit it, I was sucked in by the description and the clever play on Waid’s earlier titles—the idea is that a former sidekick has grown up to become a horrific, Bieberesque human being, and his former lead superhero (and also, his father) has to work with him one last time. Boy, do they hate each other, the way family members who worked together for years realistically may hate each other, while also caring. Interesting variation on the Batman/Robin/dead hero’s mother trope, if you can stand one more woman in a refrigerator. Also gives us superheroes in the age of social media, with my takeaway being that there’s no way to win: being in the public eye means taking a lot of unwarranted hate along with whatever’s warranted.
