Miss Wilhelmina Moon is a dog governess. At her first placement, on a small island off the coast of France, her new charges - 67 dogs of all shapes, sizes and colours - run wild. Armed with patience and a passion for teaching, as well as her companions, Mitford the monkey and Petunia the French bulldog, Miss Moon soon imparts 20 important lessons to her furry brood. Some are practical, some are playful, one or two are a little unusual, but all are necessary for the raising of happy, healthy and well-mannered dogs (and humans).… (meer)

The paintings are beautiful; this one probably works best as an art book or gift book than anything else. It's hard to determine what the target demographic is -- it's a bit too grown-up for the picture book crowd, too sparse for the chapter book crowd, and too short for the adults who are into personal development / life tips.

Note: I received a digital review copy of this book through NetGalley. ( )

My girls (7 and 3) enjoyed this book, but the illustrations were much more interesting for us than the actual text. Perhaps that was the point? The paintings showed Miss Moon an her motley assortment of dog charges in various silly poses and costumes--the ballerina tutu on a pug was a favorite. The words were not as interesting, and the girls both quickly tuned them out in favor of just making up stories about the diferent dogs in each picture. So...a fun book for us, but not for the story itself! We've actually reread this one several times and I've ignored the words entirely and we've just discussed the pictures and the story they tell, so it actually works quite well as a picture book. ( )

The book is a work of art, I wish I could hang it on my wall. Not so much a storybook, as a collection of wonderful images accompanied with great life tips for humans and dogs which could start some interesting conversations with the child you are sharing the book with. In any case this is a must for any dog lovers out there. ( )

Although the wise words are simple one-liner guidelines, the illustrations make up for any lack of story. Searching each page for the sixty-seven dogs, who are conveniently identified in one group picture, as well as the monkey and birds, will keep young readers entertained. A beautiful book. ( )

Charming, humorous illustrations by author/illustrator Janet Hill, but the text is a little dry (dare I say boring?) and didactic, which may limit its appeal for most young readers. ( )
