After I read this book, I asked my Dad if he was writing books under the pen name Elizabeth Pantley. It sounded so much like him. I thought the advice was very simple and practical. But she also managed to write the book with humor, which made it immensely readable. I recommend this to friends all the time, because I believe the advice really works if you follow through. I really like her mantra "Say what you mean, mean what you say, do what you said you would do." Sounds simple, but so many parents have trouble following through with it. ( )

Excellent. Where "How to Talk..." discusses ways to communicate with your child, this book presents actions to take. Both describe the same philosophy of parenting; one where you respect your children while providing them with appropriate structure.

Pantley does a remarkable job of talking to parents in a tone that provides motivation to change without fits of self-flagellation. She openly discusses parental anger, and the need for parents to take time and energy to take care of themselves. ( )
