Biography & Autobiography. Sports & Recreations. Nonfiction. HTML:NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A deeply affecting coming-of-age memoir about family, love, loss, basketball—and life itself—by the beloved author of The Prince of Tides and The Great Santini

/> During one unforgettable season as a Citadel cadet, Pat Conroy becomes part of a basketball team that is ultimately destined to fail. And yet for a military kid who grew up on the move, the Bulldogs provide a sanctuary from the cold, abrasive father who dominates his life—and a crucible for becoming his own man.

With all the drama and incandescence of his bestselling fiction, Conroy re-creates his pivotal senior year as captain of the Citadel Bulldogs. He chronicles the highs and lows of that fateful 1966–67 season, his tough disciplinarian coach, the joys of winning, and the hard-won lessons of losing. Most of all, he recounts how a group of boys came together as a team, playing a sport that would become a metaphor for a man whose spirit could never be defeated.

Bel libro, molto cestistio e quindi, per me, bello. La storia di una stagione sui campi da basket universitario fra vittorie e sconfitte, gioie e arabbiature, infortuni e successi. Ma se non piace il basket, evitare. ( )

I'm not a basketball fan, but adore Pat Conroy and so far I'll read whatever he wants to write about. I would have liked to hear more about his thoughts on writing and some of his experiences as a young man other than those revolving around basketball, but I realize that's not the book he wrote.

Two quotes that I like:
"You do not learn how to write novels in a writing program. You learn how by leading an interesting life. Open yourself up to all experiences. Let life pour through you the way light pours through leaves" (348) Colonel Doyle to Conroy on going to graduate school/The Iowa Writer's Workshop.

"I learned that I had to turn the writer's eye inward to find the gargoyles and stunted trolls that ate me alive. Then, I didn't know that I would build my house of art on my demonic, yet powerless, hatred of my father and my wrecked, guilty love of my fabulous and treacherous mother" (344). ( )

I enjoy reading Pat Conroy and this is one of his best! What a great memoir about his senior year at the Citadel, where he was point guard on the basketball team. He did not realize (nor did his coach) what a great player he was but he gave it his best, in spite of the poor coaching skills of Mel Thompson. It seems to me that Coach Mel Thompson did everything to destroy the spirit of the boys on his team. He never made them come together as a team but Pat succeeds in doing that 30 years later when he reconnects with these men and they go over that horrible year together. Pat really has nothing but appreciation for that year because it helped him when he went through the hard stuff of life. I could hardly put this book down. Very good read! ( )

I love Conroy but I just couldn't get into this one right now. I'll try it again some other time.

Took me almost 8 years to finish this one. I love Conroy but am not a basketball fan. Listening to the audiobook helped, though. ( )
