Welcome, foolish mortals, to Disney Press' spookiest chapter book series yet: Tales from the Haunted Mansion! Based on the attractions from the Disney Parks, each new book tells the story of one of the Haunted Mansion's 999 ghosts. With eerie illustrations throughout and a beautiful three-piece cloth cover, the books are designed to look like they came straight from the library in the Haunted Mansion. Tales from the Haunted Mansion is a fun, spooky ride, just like the attraction from the Disney Parks. And if readers are familiar with the ride, they'll see elements of it throughout the entire story, from items straight of the Mansion (are those pictures stretching?) to lyrics from the narration that is heard in each Doom Buggy. In this bone-chilling book, you will hear the terrifying tales of the Fearsome Foursome--four kids who look to out-scare each other. But just wait until they hear my spooky stories. Who am I? I am Amicus Arcane, your librarian and host. Your Ghost Host. So read on... if you dare!.… (meer)

This book was good, the first half of the book (The Fearsome Foursome) was slightly better IMHO, but both volumes were enjoyable. It is obviously "YA Fiction", but don't let that scare you away. It is campy and clever, well written, and has all the tropes of many horror stories you might read. Readers of the Goosebumps series will enjoy this book, but so will adults looking for the nostalgia of Disney's Haunted Mansion ride. I am looking forward to finishing up with volumes III and IV because, you know... there's always room for one more. ( )

Four adolescents who love telling each other scary stories find themselves in a haunted mansion, where a creepy librarian tells them each a story - with a very familiar main character. I knew it was horror but still I was surprised by how dark this was. But pleasantly so - scary stories don't have to have happy endings, after all. ( )

Fun little book with a numerous nods to the Disney ride. It's written for a teen or young adult audience, think or RL Stine or maybe Twilight Zone. A group of four children who call themselves the fearsome foursome who like to tell spooky stories to each other get an invitation to a mysterious old mansion. When there they become trapped in the library and meet the librarian, Amicus Arcane. He makes a bet with them that he can have the scariest story of all of the. He pulls out a book that has a tale about each of the four children. To tell more would ruin the surprise. ( )

At first I wasn't really loving this book but the tales got better as they went on. I just found the book to be a bit too juvenile for me.

On the plus side I did appreciate the ride references (The Haunted Mansion is my favorite ride). I also loved the whole appearance of the book; it's very pretty. That being said I will probably buy volume 2 when it comes out. ( )

Thanks to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of this title.

Basically, the book is a collection of scary stories told by the Haunted Mansion's ghostly librarian, Amicus Arcane. The stories, of course, have various references to the Disney theme parks.

Very little literary merit. It would be okay as a fun read for kids because of the Disney references, but that's about it. The narration is annoying and unnecessary at times and causes the story line to feel interrupted. The writing to me feels like the book was quickly thrown together without much thought to the plots, but since the book is for ages 9 to 12, it may be overlooked. ( )
