This assumes a basic understanding of how the heart works, so it is definitely better for older kids. Thomas’s legacy is amazing, and I’m glad his contributions are recognized and celebrated.

This book focuses on the real life of Vivien Thomas who started as a poor boy and then worked his way from janitor to research technician. Along the way he had to fight against many obstacles, including racism. Eventually, Thomas finds a way to do open heart surgery on a baby which changes medicine and saves countless lives. This book would be great for a History or Science classroom since it deals with innovation in science and medicine and takes place in History.

Tiny Stitches tells the real life story of Vivien Thomas. He started as a poor boy who couldn't afford college. He worked his way up from the job title of janitor to the title of research technician. He faced much opposition due to racism. Eventually, Thomas developed a way that operations could be done on the tiny vessels in babies' hearts. His innovation changed medicine and saved many lives.
This book would make a good addition to any classroom. It shows that when determined, it is possible to overcome adversity and make changes that change history. Vivien Thomas did not doubt his worth or his abilities. This book is inspirational. ( )

Tiny Stitches is a true story about Vivien Thomas. Vivien Thomas was an African American man who discovered the way to save infants unable to get the right amount of oxygen - also known as "blue babies
." The story goes through the life of how Mr. Thomas worked under a great surgeon, doing research and shadowing alongside the surgeon, and eventually finding the way to cure "blue babies." Unfortunately, Vivien Thomas wasn't recognized for the feat, but they didn't stop him from continuing in what he loved.
This book is great for any content area, but for math in particular because it gives the lesson to kids to set a goal and as long as you aim for the goal you can achieve it. This book deserves 5 stars because of the achievement Viven Thomas reached and the lesson is gives to the reader. ( )
