Op dit moment geen Discussie gesprekken over dit boek. would have most definitely received at least 4 stars from me, where it not horribly fatshaming and fatphobic throughout too bad because in all other aspects it was as close you can get to a perfect romance novel the heroine is smart, funny, independent, complex all characters are well written and feel real -apart from the main romance guy, you can tell who he is very early on, who's unrealistically perfect- was tired with some of the cliches (does there need to be a last-call wedding cancellation?) but they were very few This read like a Desi Bridget Jones... Well, almost. The novel is from the POV of a hijab-wearing Sofia Khan and details her somewhat adventurous love life. There were many LOL moments, especially the wedding-related nags of relatives, which were enjoyable and somewhat relatable. The love story was sweet but it felt a little rushed, especially towards the end. I loved Sofia Khan and was nodding my head in agreement during most of her monologues. The shaadi-obsessed mother and the cool-as-a-cucumber father also gave me Mr. And Mrs. Bennet vibes from Pride & Prejudice. The language was easy-breezy and I had a blast reading it aloud. So, if you are looking for a fun quick read, pick this one up! This book is the perfect combination of funny and warm gooey lovely feelings! My ultimate combination when reading "chic lit". Before reading this I had this book described to me as "the Muslim Bridget Jones" which I guess it kind of is - but I think I like Sofia more - something about her internal narrative resonated with me. It was also a really nice way to get insight into a different culture that didn't feel "out of character". The terms and language were described or translated in a really organic way that fitted with the internal narrative but also explained enough in a way that didn't make me feel if I was missing something. Can't wait to read the sequel! geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

'Brilliant idea! Excellent! Muslim dating? Well, I had no idea you were allowed to date.' Then he leaned towards me and looked at me sympathetically. 'Are your parents quite disappointed?' Unlucky in love once again after her sort-of-boyfriend/possible-marriage-partner-to-be proves a little too close to his parents, Sofia Khan is ready to renounce men for good. Or at least she was, until her boss persuades her to write a tell-all expose about the Muslim dating scene. As her woes become her work, Sofia must lean on the support of her brilliant friends, baffled colleagues and baffling parents as she seeks stories for her book. But in amongst the marriage-crazy relatives, racist tube passengers and polygamy-inclined friends, could there be a lingering possibility that she might just be falling in love? I loved this! It’s a strong candidate for my favourite books of the year list. Sofia is warm and funny and insightful about her experiences, her culture and her relationships. I particularly liked the portrayal of supportive friendships and of thirty-somethings still living with their parents.
“It would just be far easier deciding to live life as a single person if everyone would let me.”
“People are always going to ask when you’re getting married,” said Maria. “That’s what makes people actually get married.”
I think there should be a ‘Marriage’ jar. Anyone who mentions it has to put in a pound. The proceeds can go towards funding research into arthritis and obsession. ( )
