This was a new author for me. Her stories are decently paced. You don't get whiplash, but you don't feel like you are missing important pieces. This first book in this series, is about the story of Anthony, the Master Vampire in the Atlanta territory, and the human girl, Kaia. Both of them come into this with secrets, but neither realize the stakes are their hearts. Come to find out, Kaia is also friends with some people intimately in Anthony's circle, but she doesn't know their secret, either. This girl has no clue she is about to enter a world unknown to most. Her friend Ethan is playing a dangerous game, but no one knows the rules but Ethan. You will be introduced to vampires and shifters of all kind in this delightful read. You will see Anthony fighting with himself about how much to tell her, how to tell her, as well as the demons in his past from taking care of his responsibilities as the Master of all the supernaturals in his area. It is a hard burden to bear, but someone has to do it. Anthony does it well, but will Kaia be able to accept ALL that he is, or only the parts he shows her. I can't wait to read the next one and find out more about Anthony and Kaia, as well as figuring out how Ethan will continue to play a part in it. ( )

Anthony and Kaia's love story includes, lies, secrets, hidden enemies, death, and blood...of course, there's love and sex.

Anthony Foster is Master Vampire over the entire Atlanta region, which includes shifters and vampires. His rules are simple and few, but non-negotiable. His territory differs from others in that shifters and vampires aren't killing each other and the vampires are not to drink from humans. He's fiercely protective of his Family and his territory. However, when it comes to women, he's insecure and untrusting.

Kaia, the only human in a supernatural-filled apartment building owned and managed by Ethan, a Master Vampire who lives right next door. She knows nothing about the supernaturals surrounding her...she has her own secrets.

Ethan, a Master Vampire allowed by Anthony to stay in Atlanta without joining Anthony's Family. The supernaturals in Ethan's building make up Ethan's Family, including Kaia. His secrets include why he hates Anthony and why he's allowed a human to live at Wild Woods.

With good secondary characters like Zach and Sebastian the book adds up to a very good story with nicely developed characters. We get to know their insecurities, their good and bad sides, and ride along as they fall in love. Very enjoyable read. I received a copy of this book from Reading Alley, the author, and publisher for an honest review. ( )

STORY LINE:

Author Kate Wendley has created a world of shifters and vampires that is very different. We see them with emotions, insecurities, jealousy, envy, in other words, we see human emotions in her characters.

Anthony is the Master Vampire of the Atlanta Territories; he is a good Master who punishes when he must and has been emotionally alone for almost 300 years. Romantic relationships never work for him especially with humans. He has emotional baggage and insecurities when it comes to relationships.

Human Kate had an abusive childhood emotionally and physically as well as emotional insecurities. These two meet by chance and what follows is a roller coaster of a story filled with action, drama, and emotion. Kate and Anthony begin a relationship in the human and shifter/vampire world.

CHARACTERS, PLOTTING, AND DEVELOPMENT:

Jonathan's character development was progressive throughout the book. He is an emotionally insecure in the romance department; he longs for someone to share his life, but someone who wants him for himself not power or position. Kate has her own emotional scars from years abuse. Both must come to terms with their past to begin a future.

Ms. Wendley wove the threads of this story together to produce a very good book showing the emotional side of the shifter/vampire as well as their need for family and friends. The plotting of the story and the pacing was well done as we travel through Ms. Wendley's world of shifter and vampire.

The story has twists and turns that will keep you reading through the night to finish the story. This book has drama, action, and at times cruelty. I became enmeshed in the story. Ms. Wendley has the ability to transport you into the story line.

Of course every good paranormal novel must have a villain or two. We find our main adversary is basically a good man scarred from his past and on a quest for vengeance. I loved Ms. Wendley's creation of shifters and vampires as a different species which had all the insecurities and needs we as humans possess.

I found myself cheering for Anthony and Kate to find the right combination to forge a life together and the villain, Ethan, to find peace. Did this happen? You will have to read the book to find out. No spoilers here!

RECOMMENDATION:

I enjoyed this book very much; staying up very late to reach the end. This was a great start to a good series, which I plan to follow. My next review will be book 2 in this series. This book has sex and violence; I would recommend this book for young adult and adult audiences.
