Wargames through the Ages was first published to fill a gap in literature of the hobby of wargaming. It was a one volume summary of ancient and medieval warfare. After many years of research and writing on the subject of wargaming, Donald Featherstone provided, under one cover, all the information that a wargamer required to build up armies in the ancient and medieval period. Each period of warfare was considered and details given of the soldiers themselves, their dress, arms and equipment, leaders, tactics and their style of fighting. The major wars and battles were listed, so that further information could be obtained by reading other accounts of these conflicts and the biographies of those leaders. Each section details techniques and style of fighting of the various nations and armies and other suggestions how they could best be simulated on the table-top battlefield. Superb drawings of the soldiers in their various battle uniforms add much to the attractiveness of this book.… (meer)

This is another of the several wargaming books by Donald Featherstone, the leading British tabletop wargaming writer of his time (1960s-70s). This book describes the armies of a series of national or ethnic groups from 3000 BC to 1500 AD, beginning with the Sumerians and ancient Egyptians ad ending with the Swiss, the Hundred Years War, and the mercenaries of the late middle ages. Each army is described in terms of its weapons, formations and tactics, thumbnail account of major battles, and a statistical chart rating its strengths in numerical scores which may be somewhat arbitrary but allow comparisons between armies across time. There is also an appendix listing the miniature figures for less armies available as of that time --now mostly obsolete-- and a brief bibliography of books which have pictures of the armies --now largely superseded by the Osprey series. Featherstone remains a driving genius behind this wonderful little hobby. Even 35 years after this book's publication, and many changes in ancient miniature gaming, Featherstone's efforts to quantify the abilities of historical armies retains relevance. An interesting if a bit out-dated reference for the miniature wargamer and those interested in ancient or medieval warfare. ( )
