The 1st century AD saw the Republic replaced by a new political system. Not surprisingly, this impacted on every kind of literature. These thirteen papers, from a colloquium held at the University of Tuebingen in 2000, discuss the literary expression of propaganda and the ways in which leading figures were written about, both by themselves and by others. The role of architecture and coinage is also considered. The first four papers put the subject in a theoretical perspective, examining the place of `propaganda' and `representation' in medieval and modern political systems.
