Angela, a Fish & Wildlife Agent in the Rockies, finds a murdered protester of Prairie Dogs, and works on solving the murder with help from her knowledge of indigenous animal habits. She is a birdwatcher, and lover of burrowing owls. I thoroughly enjoyed this mystery from cover to cover and highly recommend it! Deze bespreking is geschreven voor LibraryThing Vroege Recensenten. I liked this book. It's a murder mystery set on a wildlife refuge. I learned some interesting things about burrowing owls, and about the work of US Fish and Wildlife agents. The mystery part was engaging enough, but the plot is a bit thin at times. Also, there were a LOT of typos in this book, which was a bit distracting at times. Overall this was a good weekend read. I would recommend it if you like books from which you learn somewhat obscure facts about a somewhat obscure subject. Deze bespreking is geschreven voor LibraryThing Vroege Recensenten. This is a reasonably good mystery set in a context of birdwatchiers and concern for bird populations. It was an easy read and I'll watch for other books in the series. Bird-related clues are important to the mystery - a refreshing change from some cozy mysteries. I did not find myself engaged with the characters, but each book stands alone with different characters, so there is not a lot of room for development. Deze bespreking is geschreven voor LibraryThing Vroege Recensenten. I had no idea that there was a species of burrowing owls who imitate the sound of a rattle snake to keep would-be predators away. These owls play a special role in the unraveling of this avian who-done-it. The discussion on native American ceremonial practices and who has rights to own remains of certain protected species is interesting and informative. The twists and turns of this police procedural keep the reader guessing right through to the very end. This may be my first introduction Christine Goff's avian mystery series but it certainly will not be the last I read of her stories. This is an informative and entertaining cozy mystery and is part of series. I am grateful to publisher Astor and Blue Editions and LibraryThing Early Reviewers for having provided a free copy of this book. Their generosity however, did not influence this review, the words of which are mine alone. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

Angela Dimato, a tenacious U.S. Fish and Wildlife Agent, struggles to rebuild her life after the murder of her partner. During a routine tour of the Rocky Mountain Arsenal, Angela assesses the growing prairie dog town within the wildlife refuge when, to her horror, she discovers the body of a soccer mom sprawled out among the burrows. With her trademark instinct and her gun in tow, Angela investigates the murder, even as she battles the crippling flashbacks haunting her from her partner's case. The investigation takes a sinister turn when the dead woman is identified as the leader of a group petitioning for the eradication of the prairie dog town. As Angela digs toward the truth, she finds her only hope is to tap into the wisdom of the case's sole eye-witness -- a burrowing owl -- before more lives become at stake.
