Great illustrations, and a nice story about a fox who wants a friend. They try to be like a dog so the humans will play with them, but the human games just end up being itchy and no fun. But then Ooko finds a raccoon friend and they have a lot in common ("This is my stick. This is my other stick. And this is my other other stick. WANNA PLAY?"). Extra points for including a lady with hairy legs. Ooko is a fox who is lonely. He goes out looking for a friend. What he finds are dogs (other foxes) and their masters (Debbies). He tries to figure out what the Debbies like about the other foxes and he tries to be like them. After finding someone to play with, he discovers that he does not want to wear itchy clothes and be on a leash. He finds a friend who likes him for who and what he is and he does not have to change. I enjoyed the art in this book. It was interesting enough to keep my attention and just enough colour. My 2 and a half year old grandson was not too sure about the illustrations though. The story was not too heavy handed to get the message across. Be yourself and so not try to change for others. The parallels between what we face in society today and Ooko's difficulties are easy enough for a young child (pre-school to primary) to understand. I recommend that school libraries and primary classrooms use this book with their students. I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. A little fox named Ooko has a stick, a rock, and a leaf, but no one to play with. She sees humans ("Debbies") with dogs and sneakily takes a dog's place, but then realizes she doesn't like the way Debbies play - baths are cold, sweaters are itchy, collars are too tight. When a raccoon called Oomi asks "Want to play stick?" Ooko knows she has found the perfect playmate. "Oh my crickets! Let's play stick!" A whimsical autumn palette suits the story perfectly.
