This story continues with Bantling in prison, CJ still having nightmares, & she and Dom are engaged to be married. A horrific murder of a police officer turns into more than it seems as more are being killed by someone giving the term "cop killer" a new meaning. It could be drug related with the evidence gathered but CJ knows better. Everyone involved in Bantling's arrest are showing up murdered. CJ and Dom come to blows over the investigation and there is more afoot. This book was OK but there was too much regurgitation of the first book and pages of acronyms for state police agencies that didn't need to be explained along with too much description of how the agencies are housed. I started skimming over a lot of that because it was never relevant in this book. The book ends with a king of shock that sets up for another book ( )

READ IN DUTCH

I didn't read the first book in this series - I know, my bad - but it really felt like I missed a lot, because this book has so many ties to the first one. I would definitely recommend you to start reading the first book, Retribution, because I felt like I missed a great deal.

The story itself is quite interesting, cops are being killed and it seems like someone knows about a cover-up that has taken place in - you guessed it- the first book. The writing is nice, the book is fast paced and a lot happens. Still, I never really got the feeling that I really was enjoying the story though. It just didn't seem special enough. ( )

After I read Cupido, I was very curious about this book. How C.J. would be doing, if Bantling really was put away etc.

At first, I had no idea that this was the second book n a row, because it started 'all over' again. Only in the course of the story one finds out how this second book is linked to the first.
That is okay, though.

I was a bit disappointed however, by this second book. I can't exactly tell you why. The thing is, that it didn't keep me reading as the first one did. I was not so very curious, anxious to find out how it would end this time. With all events happening I never had the (almost) unbearable tension of 'will justice be done? will all end well?'

I will not give away a lot about the book. The ending, when this one case is involved is okay, a bit predicatable and sort of repetition of events, but okay. When the realtionship is involved, the ending is nice, a result of the end of the case at hand.
I just want to say that I find the totally open end to the whole book very frustrating. I have no idea if there's a third book (already) and that bothers me, because I want to know how it ENDS. Be it happy, be it a sad ending, I need a dot to the story somewhere.

I think it is very well worth reading. I will not read this a second time, I hope I'll not be waiting for a third book that will never be written.

I think I need to read the one before this one...

Hoffman did an excellent job explaining the legal system, but the story was weak. CJ Townsend is a rape survivor and an ADA who takes down bad guys left and right, but she spends the whole book being a wimp and whining. I'm not sure if the book was supposed to be a gritty crime novel with some romance or a romance novel with a mystery. Either way, I won't be reading anything else in the series. Y'all know I do not do romance novels! ( )
