From the Osprey Warrior series. This book is devoted to Highland clansmen from the first through the third Jacobite risings. It's really devoted more to the third war (Culloden) with the second in 1715 barely mentioned. Not a lot devoted to those things we might hope to find: social history, clan organization, tactics. Instead, Reid devotes space to the highland charge at Killiecrankie, Prestonpans and Culloden. Before we reach the plates, the author lapses into very detailed descriptions of the plates, which are very good. Again, we find more color devoted to the 1740's than anything else.

The plates are, of course, loaded with great pictures of highlanders in various tartans--a bonus for those of us who paint them. The illustrator is the late, and wonderful, Angus McBride, and this work doesn't disappoint. However, Reid's text is lacking. ( )
