In the setting and characters, it had the feel of 1930-1950 set book, but the writing and story style was much more like noir. There was little mystery or puzzle it was more about tension and sudden violence. The mood was bleak and the writing style spare. It was interesting and a bit jarring juxtaposition. As a side note I was extremely taken with the cover painting and eventually identified it a view of the village of Stainworth in West Yorkshire. It looks similar today. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

Amy Snowden, in middle age, has long since settled into a lonely life in the Yorkshire town of Gunnarshaw, until--to her neighbours' surprise--she suddenly marries a much younger man. Months later, Amy is found dead--apparently by her own hand--and her husband, Wright, has disappeared. The introductory essay by Martin Edwards is informative and a good read too. It sets the stage for the story as well as providing a brief biography of the author.
