Bury was a giant in Classical history in the late Nineteenth and early Twentieth Century. He was the General Editor of the "Cambridge Ancient History" in its earliest incarnation, which was a massive status statement. This two volume set from dover was a section of his four part study of the Eastern Roman Empire, which concludes just short of Alexius Comnenus, who reigned 1096 - 1118. While a big book, and short on many of the aspects of Early Medieval scholarship we pursue today, it remains an interesting discussion of the international and domestic aspects of the Empire, in this case from the Death of Theodosius I to the end of the reign of Justinian I. There are many useful epigrams. ( ) geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
