I really liked Ben Coes' first Dewey Andreas novel "Power Down," but they've kinda gone downhill from there. They're not bad, but just run-of-the-mill thrillers. In this one, the deputy secretary of defense convinces a young, well-educated Syrian to take the lead in building his own nation, with the help of $2 billion in US "black pool" money. His hope is this man, Tristan Nazir, will use the arms-for-intelligence deal to establish a powerful, US-friendly country in the Middle East. Nazir (surprise!) has other ideas. When a tanker headed for Syria loaded with $1 million worth of weapons is stopped in route, Nazir directs a US-based cell to take over a dorm at Columbia University. By amazing coincidence, the daughter of someone Dewey is falling for is there helping her Little Sister get settled in. Now, 500 students and parents are being held for ransom until the tanker safely makes it to port. I will say Coes did a great job describing how the terrorists secured the building, making it (almost!) impenetrable. I was hoping Coes had re-invigorated his protagonist and plots, but not really. Disappointing. Another solid entry in the Dewey Andreas series, in this entry we have the background of a historical fictioneque re-imagining of the build up of ISIS in Syria and how they came to be armed and in power. It is from this background that the story takes place. I found the story was reasonably original and the story continued to delve into the Dewey Andreas character treating him not as a super human anti terrorist machine but rather an actual person. Overall I enjoyed the book and look forward to the next chapter in the series. A covert, multi-billion arms-for-influence program goes catastrophically awry, leaving the United States with only one hope: Dewey Andreas. Filled with believable characters, compelling situations straight out of the headlines, spine-tingling suspense, and a relentless pace, this chilling tale of a race against time will leave readers on the edge of their seats until they’ve turned the final page. Highly recommended. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

"The violent terrorist group ISIS has launched a major military campaign to take over Syria. But as they commit more and more public atrocities, their sources for ammunition are drying up. However, their charismatic and tyrannical leader, Tristan Nazir, has a major card left to play, which will get a new secret shipment of arms underway. Dewey Andreas is sent into the field to meet Mallory, the Milan CIA station chief who has explosive proof about the source of the terrorists group's original funding. While ISIS operatives take out both Mallory and his source, Dewey escapes with the proof the group's original munitions were provided by a black-ops program from deep within the Pentagon itself. The program unravels in time for the arms shipment to be stopped before it reaches its destination. But Isolda isn't finished. He launches a bold strike into the heart of America, sending a team to take over a dorm at Columbia University, capturing nearly 500 college students as hostages. Among those hostages is CIA Director Hector Calibrisi's daughter, Daisy. For every hour that the shipment of weapons is delayed, the radicals will publicly execute one student. A frontal assault will result in untold number of dead students. Sending the shipment will give Isolda and his followers the means to capture Syria and its resources, creating a terrorist run nation. In a situation with no solutions, there remains only one option Dewey Andreas"-- Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |
