Lister gazed out of the porthole and catalogue the series of disasters that had led him to this point in space and time: the bad decisions, the poor career choices, the unreliable friendships that had led him here - on a prison ship bound for the most inhospitable penal colony in the outer cosmos... and all he'd ever wanted was to be a soft metal guitar icon. I don't understand why neither of the Grant Naylor duo can just write an original novel. Apparently I was supposed to subject myself to Backwards first, but I read that it has even less original content.

So I'll give his one extra star, because some of the original stuff was decent despite the vast problems with the writing. ( )

This is book #4, despite what it says there, though this is a bit of a stand-alone. Alternate universes, alternate Listers. I'd say this one ended in the way that series finales do. I don't like that in general. The alternate Lister was so annoying. ( )

I was quite the fan of the earlier Red Dwarf books (but not the television series) so I looked forward to "Last Human". And, as is usually the case, I was underwhelmed with this latest (and possibly the last) entry into the Red Dwarf series.

"Last Human" finds Dave Lister on what is left of Earth, encountering human sized cockroaches and the like. To be honest, I lost a lot of interest by about three-quarters through. ( )

Doug Naylor's Last Human is the third Red Dwarf novel following Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers and Better Than Life, both of which Naylor co-authored with his Red Dwarf co-creator Rob Grant. Last Human picks up right where Better Than Life left off, though it deviates far more from the original series than the preceding novels. In many respects, that's a good thing as the story is original and not a variation on a familiar plot. Naylor's portrayal of the characters he co-created features everything fans of the show want to see while also offering further science fiction hi-jinks and a satisfying conclusion to their journey. Though Rob Grant wrote a fourth book, titled Backwards, that novel is an alternate sequel to Better Than Life rather than a continuation of Last Human. ( )

Last Human by Doug Naylor is the third book based on the British science fiction comedy show Red Dwarf. The crew of Red Dwarf accidentally end up in an alternate dimension and they find an alternate copy of their transport ship Starbug with all the crew dead inside except for Lister. They set out on a quest to find what's become of the alternate Lister, but when they find him, he turns out to be a lot more different from Lister than they had imagined. I would say that overall this book wasn't quite as funny as the first two, but it still had parts that really made me laugh and it was full of exciting adventure, so was a pretty good read overall. I think it's definitely worth reading if you enjoyed the first two books.

This book picks up right where Better Than Life left off, so you should definitely read it and Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers before reading this book. There are bits and pieces from the show in this book, but the storyline itself is very different. It's not necessarily a bad thing though. It's pretty cool to read storylines that were never in the show. I'd just recommend not starting this book(or the others before it) until you finish watching the show to avoid confusion. ( )
