Will a dark history doom their future together?

New York copper Tom Halloran is a man with a past. If anyone finds out he once ran with the notorious O'Connell tunnel gang, he'll spend the rest of his life doing hard time behind bars. But Tom's secret is threatened when a horrible murder on his beat seems to have been caused by the same ancient magic that killed his gang.

Cat shifter Cicero is determined to investigate the disappearance of one friend and the death of another, even though no one else believes the cases are connected. When the trail of his investigation crosses Tom's, the very bohemian Cicero instinctively recognizes the uncultured Irish patrolman as his witch. Though they're completely unsuited to one another, Cicero has no choice but to work alongside Tom...all the while fighting against the passion growing within.

Tom knows that taking Cicero as his familiar would only lead to discovery and disaster. Yet as the heat between them builds, Tom's need for the other man threatens to overcome every rational argument against becoming involved.

But when their investigation uncovers a conspiracy that threatens all of New York, Tom must make the hardest decision of his life: to live a lie and gain his heart's desire, or to confess the truth and sacrifice it all.

I'd love to give this book a 5 just for the world building and the excellent cast of diverse characters but I feel like the story is too wordy. Tom and Cicero were fun together. I felt awful for Tom having to live as a fugitive. The hexbreaking was my favorite part. Ms Hawk is a writer to follow as her imagination is boundless. ( )

In Hexbreaker, the first book in the Hexworld series, we’re taken into the alternate universe of a New York set in the late 1890’s. In this world there’s magic. A non-magical police force exists as does a Magical Witch Police, or MWP, that employs witches and familiars. The non-magical and magical police forces don’t get along in this universe. We meet Tom Halloran who’s a copper, and cat shifter Cicero who works for the MWP. This story is told in third person through Tom’s and Cicero’s eyes.

4.5 Stars

I was immediately sucked back into the magical world of New York as soon as I started reading. This is listed as the first book, but there is a short prequel called, “The 13th Hex.” I don’t think it’s necessary to read the very first book, but it did introduce Dominic and Rook, a Hexman and his raven familiar, who appear quite often in this story. Now back to the world building. It’s absolutely fantastic! I am an avid Harry Potter fan, and this story is like Harry Potter only grittier, with non-magical people being aware of people and shifters who are magical. They live side by side, although there is conflict. First as mentioned between the two law enforcement offices and as the story moves along, we find even among the ranks of the magical community.

This is where Tom Halloran comes in. He’s a good copper who lives alone and looks after the people on his beat. He’s a big ginger man that looks like a fighter, but is gentle and kind. He's also a virgin. Sure he's tossed one off in the barracks with his fellow copper Bill on occasion, but has never experienced all that a man can offer. Tom also has a special ability he keeps hidden. After the vicious death of someone on his beat he sees a similarity to something that happened long ago in his past. A past that still haunts him and that eventually catches up with him. In the meantime he’s given orders to talk to the MWP about the murder and death. At the office of Ferguson and his owl familiar Athene, he meets Cicero, the black cat shifter who appeared in the prequel book.

When Cicero enters Ferguson’s office, he knows immediately that Tom is his witch and Cicero refuses to have anything to do with him. Tom is a brute in Cicero’s opinion. The kind of man who beat him up and his mother. Over time Cicero finds out Tom’s nothing like the men he knew, but he resists his attraction to Tom. Cicero is what Tom calls ‘bohemian.’ He likes the arts, culture, but Cicero doesn’t have all that much money. He’s employed by the MWP but he needs to soon find a witch to bond with or lose his job and Cicero doesn’t want to choose just anyone, and he certainly doesn’t want Tom. I have to say that my impression of Cicero in this book was very different from the last book. For some reason, I thought Cicero was more of a chunky tomcat in the first story, not a sleek, smaller cat. In fact, the two guys on the cover don’t match the characters in the book at all. Cicero is shorter and thinner than Tom, and Tom is much broader, bigger than Cicero.

I can’t mention much about the plot because it’s kind of convoluted which at times overwhelmed me. It’s almost like there was too much going on, too packed with events and people and shifters.

What I can mention are these things:

Bad Hexes
Bad Witches and Familiars
A search for Isaac, a Mastiff shifter
New characters, Owen a Hexmaker, and Bill, the copper and friend of Tom’s
The past catching up to Tom
Deaths
And Explosions

I hope there’s a story in the future with Isaac finding his witch. It’s kind of complicated about his situation so I won’t say anything more. Except, I thought the author might be heading for a threesome with Isaac, Owen and Bill, since Owen can create hexes, but it's likely just my wishful thinking.

Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed this story despite at times, there being so much going on. The world-building was amazing. I identified more with Tom than Cicero in this story, whereas in the prequel I did with both Dominic and Rook. However, I did love the characterization of how Cicero hated getting wet. There are a few fun scenes of that happening in the book. Good story, good writing and I can’t wait for the next book. And, I want to put in a vote for another story with Dominic and Rook as the MCs because one short prequel wasn’t enough. I give The Hexbreaker, 5 Stars.

There are some weird dystopian elements to this (enforced familiar bonding, esp.), but in general great smut, great and very imaginative world building, great setting (early New York City) and pretty decent characters. I was confused why Cicero's eyes kept shifting color -- from yellow-green to bright blue, but I loved learning more about underground gay clubs and the history of the hoochie-coochie. I also loved that the relationship building felt realistic and tender.

I am frustrated that the usual "it's all my fault" (and so therefore no one could ever love me) trope was in full effect -- mini-rant -- why must characters decide that something that is completely beyond their control be totally their fault and the motivation for all of the future decision making forever more in guilt and sorrow and mea maxima culpa, amen? It's tedious. However, Hawk kept that pretty well reigned in, and as a first book in a series, its got fantastic potential. Looking forward to the future adventures! ( )

This really drew me into the story. I liked both main characters, and there was a nice balance of seeing more from the previous couple, and a bit about the future characters in the coming books, without hijacking the story away from this couple. Both main characters in this book each did something that really fell short of their otherwise good character and hurt my esteem of them, but, like I said I did like them both overall, so obviously I could move past it.
