In a look at life on the comedy circuit, some of America's most famous comics share their own stories of life on the road, gigs gone wrong, and unexpected, zany moments, with contributions by Jay Leno, Jerry Seinfeld, Mike Myers, and Larry David.
Quantity over quality here, as there's a ton of comedians contributing their most boring stories (and, in some cases, other people's stories). There's no through-line, no point made, and nothing memorable here. ( )
This book was one of my few ventures into the world of non-fiction, so I did not really have many expectations. However, I did expect that a book about the stories comedians tell among themselves would be funny, and, indeed, it was. On the other hand, I, as a guy, even get tired of the penis and vagina type jokes that make up the bulk of this book. There is only so much I want to hear about blowjobs, hookers, and waitresses. I mean, don't get me wrong, it is funny, but it is entirely unbelievable. How much action do you honestly think a comedian gets? If it is a lot, then this world is a sad, sad place. Moreover, yes, that does go for the female comics as well. Anyway, I suppose that these are comedians' stories, so they should be taken with a grain of salt, and if you take this book with a grain of salt, then it is most enjoyable - a worthy time killer or toilet book! This book is dedicated to all the Sheckys, Redds, and Phyllises who worked the road before there was a road. And to Steve, Jack, and Johnny, who gave them a place to sit down and tell us what happened.
