For each letter of the alphabet, there's a word that pertains to Louisiana. This book is full of Louisiana history, tells of Louisiana traditions, contains geographical information, and tells of the wildlife native to Louisiana. This book is very educational and has beautiful illustrations. I'd recommend this book. ( ) P is for Pelican is an alphabet book about Louisiana and is apart of a series by the Sleeping Bear Press. This book goes in order of the alphabet from A to Z and each letter is associated with something from Louisiana. Each page has a brief history of what was chosen for that letter and a poem. Being from Louisiana and reading this book, there were some letters I had never heard of. For letter I in the book they chose Islenos, which is a community of people found mainly in St. Bernard. I had never heard of Islenos before, so this book taught me a few things and I am from Louisiana. I think this book did a great job of giving just enough history and was beautifully illustrated. The students could have the opportunity to make their own alphabet book associated with Louisiana. P is for Pelican is a great book for children for a number of different reasons. It includes an alphabetic poetry sequence as the main story. It takes the ABC format further by given background on each item they use for each lettter of the alphabet. It gives great information on different items uniquely Louisiana. The kids love this book! They like it for the poetry and I like reading it to them because of the background it gives on each item. They don't realize how much information they are actually getting. The illustrations are beautiful. They seem to jump of the page and could be put next to a photograph and you would barely be able to tell the difference. This book is part of the “Discover America State by State Series” from Sleeping Bear Press. Nice illustrations for each letter by Laura Knorr frame the text which consists of a four line rhyming poem and simple factoid for each letter. Many of the rhymes seem forced and the choices of words to illustrate each letter is the same as many other Louisiana books (A is for alligator, M is for Mardi Gras). However the choices of “N is for Nutria” and “X is for Xavier University” are surprising picks. This book is often checked-out by a group of my kindergarteners who are on an “alphabet book kick” right now. This book could be used to introduce a project of making a class alphabet book by third grade students. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
