Twelve Years A Slave and Narrative of the Life of an American Slave (African American Classics Collection)Solomon Northup and Frederick Douglas I conclude these remarks by copying the following portrait of the religion of the south, (which is, by communion and fellowship, the religion of the north,) which I soberly affirm is "true to the life," and without caricature or the slightest exaggeration. It is said to have been drawn, several years before the present anti-slavery agitation began, by a northern Methodist preacher, who, while residing at the south, had an opportunity to see slaveholding morals, manners, and piety, with his own eyes. "Shall I not visit for these things? saith the Lord. Shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?" Sincerely and earnestly hoping that this little book may do something toward throwing light on the American slave system, and hastening the glad day of deliverance to the millions of my brethren in bonds-faithfully relying upon the power of truth, love, and justice, for success in my humble efforts-and solemnly pledging my self anew to the sacred cause,-I subscribe myself, FREDERICK DOUGLASS LYNN,Mass., April 28, 1845. Solomon tells his story with clarity, and intelligence in such an easy prose and starts off describing people and places before going on with the narrative. Within this story you will read both the brutality of slavery and the moments of kindness by slaves and some accounts of kindness from slave owners. I have read many books about slavery and how much the slave had to endure but this story was narrated in a softer, proud honorable way.
Solomon gave the reader some insight about how he thought brutality was something learned and passed down through generations. He never dismisses the way many white men treated slaves but he seemed to understand how slave owning men could grow up in an environment where slavery was accepted and not give a thought the right or wrong of the issue. This story was from the years of 1841 to 1853 and it wasn’t written for entertainment but written from Solomon’s heart and how he never lost his pride day after day of what he and other slaves suffered on a daily routine.
Solomon Northup was a free citizen of New York in 1841. He was kidnapped, torn away from his family and home, taken to Louisiana and sold as a slave where he spent twelve years between different owners at first than he was sold to another white man for ten of those years as a slave laborer on a cotton plantation near the Red River. Every day he had hopes and dreams of being found and sent home to his family. Instead, those dreams materialized in torture, pain, starvation, humiliation, and most of all watching other slaves beaten and whipped to near death. At times he was given the whip and made to whip other slaves he lived with and cared for. A few times he took the whippings himself or did the worse thing a slave could do and that was beating his master because of the cruelty he was put though and the fear of his own death….
Near the end of his twelve years as a slave he befriended someone who was known to oppose slavery and told him his story of being a free man. The man took interest in Solomon’s story and helped him through different channels to gain his freedom back. A well written story told by Solomon Northup in a heartwarming way……
