A paranoid alcoholic got bullied by a girl, and he was so butthurt about it that he wrote a book. That's literally it. ( ) Not nearly as horrible as I thought it'd be, but yeah... not great. Despite a potentially great premise, the writing is just very pedestrian, and the middle section sloggged. The second half of the book is much more engaging than the first though; I didn't think I'd get to see a slow character arc like that. Really enjoyed the character of Aisling. There's a fascinating story about the marketing of this book here too somewhere, which is pretty intriguing. Need to work in the publishing industry for this kinda drama, swear to god. I see a lot of people dislike this book because the narrator is so deeply unlikable, and I get that, but I think it might be more enjoyable if you see this as "outsider art". This is a book for those who are interested in abnormal and/or criminal psychology. This is the art of someone with a very troubled, sick mind. This isn't the diary of a normal heartbroken man, this is the diary of an Oxygen Theif. Summary: Fear and Loathing without the drugs. Take a dive into the mind of a narcissistic, sadistic, paranoid sociopath who meets his match. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

Hurt people hurt people. Say there was a novel in which Holden Caulfield was an alcoholic and Lolita was a photographer's assistant and, somehow, they met in Bright Lights, Big City. He's blinded by love. She by ambition. Diary of an Oxygen Thief is an honest, hilarious, and heartrending novel, but above all, a very realistic account of what we do to each other and what we allow to have done to us.
